Option 1: $60 curbside pickup

Pay $60 per item on the City's online payment page; after payment you'll hear from Newton's 311 system. For payments received by 10 p.m. Sunday, collection should be arranged for Thursday of the following week unless there's a trash delay on Thursday. The City says to expect an email from Newton Customer Service within 1 to 2 business days and a reminder email the business day before pickup. Set the mattress out by 7 a.m. on collection day.

Option 2: $35 drop-off on Rumford Avenue

Pay $35 per item online, then bring the mattress or box spring to the Newton Resource Recovery Center at 115 Rumford Ave. in Auburndale and check in with the attendant. Proof of payment is required, the number of items must match your receipt, and you unload the items into the storage container yourself. It's open to Newton residents only. Fall hours through October 31 are Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; call 617-796-1000 for later hours or after heavy rain.

What counts as one item, and what's excluded

Newton accepts traditional, inner spring, latex, memory foam and "mattress in a box" mattresses and box springs of all sizes. Each mattress counts as one item and each box spring as one item; a split box spring counts as two. Futon mattresses and sleeper sofas are excluded from mattress recycling and go out as $20 bulky items instead.

Cancellations and refunds

The City only refunds a pickup if you cancel and receive a cancellation email by 10 a.m. on the business day before collection. There's no refund if the item is scavenged from the curb after that deadline or isn't set out on time, and an item that missed its set-out time needs a new request and fee.

Need it carried out of the house?

ReSupply runs paid in-home pickups that include mattresses, with starting prices of $19, $49 and $99 plus a separate booking fee, and its Boston page lists Newton among the communities it serves. LoadUp's Newton page says junk removal starts at $80 for a single bulky item, and its mattress page lists removal from $85 with loaders carrying items out from any room. Confirm the final price when you book.

Donating a mattress in good condition

Newton encourages residents to sell or give away mattresses in good condition, or to ask the seller of a new mattress about recycling the old one. Household Goods in Acton accepts standard-size mattresses and box springs but refuses any with stains or rips, and its volunteer pickup doesn't reach Newton. The Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston ReStore does not accept mattresses or box springs.

How do you get rid of a mattress in Newton, Massachusetts? Here's what the City says.

Massachusetts banned mattresses and box springs from the trash in November 2022, so Newton won't take them as bulky waste.

Option one: pay sixty dollars per item online. If you pay by 10 p.m. Sunday, pickup should be set for Thursday of the following week. Set it out by 7 a.m.

Option two: drop it off at the Resource Recovery Center on Rumford Avenue for thirty-five dollars. Pay online first, bring proof, and unload it yourself. It's for Newton residents only.

Each mattress is one item, each box spring is another, and a split box spring counts as two. Futons and sleeper sofas go out as twenty dollar bulky items instead.

Need it carried out of the house? Every option, with sources, is at bye bulky dot com. Rules change, so confirm before you haul.
